Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage —
Matthew 5:31-32, 19:1-12 (Matthew pt 16)

Date: Sunday 17 June 2018

Speaker: Rev Dave Gooderidge

Summary:

One of the ways that followers of Jesus can be distinct is by their approach to marriage.  Once again we see that the Good News is that it’s not about ‘sucking it up’, trying hard and getting on with it but looking to Jesus as the perfect spouse who offers us blood bought promises that He, alone, will ultimately satisfy us.

Gospel Centred Purity —
Matthew 5:27-30 (Matthew pt 15)

Date: Sunday 3 June 2018

Speaker: Rev Dave Gooderidge

Summary:

Jesus said that lustful thoughts put our very souls at risk but how can this teaching have any relevance today when sexual ethics, even in the last five years, have veered even further away from what the Bible requires?  And how can we pursue what Jesus requires without reverting to sheer effort, rules and regulations?  How can the gospel change our hearts in this area?

Gospel Centred Reconciliation —
Matthew 5:23-26 (Matthew pt 14)

Date: Sunday 27 May 2018

Speaker: Rev Dave Gooderidge

Summary:

Here we see the importance that Jesus attached to resolving interpersonal conflict – He said it was a higher priority than worship!  As far as it depends on us we must make every effort to do what we can to bring reconciliation.  But what does it look like to do this in a gospel centred way?

Handling Anger —
Matthew 5:21-22 (Matthew pt 13)

Date: Sunday 20 May 2018

Speaker: Rev Dave Gooderidge

Summary:

How can we handle anger in a way that doesn’t simply modify our outward behaviour (any number of self help books will help us with that) but will actually change our hearts?  How can the Good News about what Jesus has done be brought to bear on our hurt, disappointment and anger such that we respond in ways that honour God and show us to belong to Him?

Outstandingly good Gospel centred resources to help with anger:
Good and Angry: Letting Go of Irritation, Complaining, and Bitterness by David Powlison
A Small Book about a Big Problem: Meditations on Anger, Patience, and Peace by Ed Welch
Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges
You Can Change by Tim Chester

Taking God’s Word Seriously —
Matthew 5:17-20 (Matthew pt 12)

Date: Sunday 6 May 2018

Speaker: Rev Dave Gooderidge

Summary:

What does it mean to take the Bible, all of it – especially the hard bits – seriously?  How can we know a confidence before God that doesn’t come from exhausting levels of rule keeping and good behaviour?  How can this confidence change our relationship with those around us such that we talk less and listen more?
